Silicon Valley firms are making information nowadays for their efforts to repair the underrepresentation of women in tech. Many are enthusiastic about increasing the pipeline of ladies studying STEM in excessive school and institution. But pipeline causes will not be the one intent for the low numbers of women: companies are failing to maintain the female staff they've. A study by Jennifer Glass and coauthors in 2013 observed that females leave STEM fields at dramatically greater charges than ladies in different occupations. After 12 years, 50% of technical females, predominately in engineering and laptop science, had switched to different fields; 20% of alternative women experts had finished the same.
The perfect-profile losses in tech are these on the senior level. These women typically are less satisfied with their careers, perceive that they are unlikely to improve at their current firms, or feel they have got to alternate jobs in order to reach the following stage. As one technological know-how govt has defined to us, “we now have some very ready females in the core administration and junior VP levels, however they depart our company to improve their careers as they consistently get passed over for promoting.”
What can corporations do to stop the departure of senior women? One critical but overlooked strategy: be certain that women have the correct kind of visibility within the institution.
In 2007 and 2008 the Clayman Institute for Gender study and the Anita Borg Institute performed research on roughly 1,800 tech workers in seven high-tech organizations, discovering that women stated being much less seemingly than their male counterparts to be assigned to excessive-visibility projects.
